Salem scientist earns worldwide recognition

A researcher for AmberWave Systems Corp. in Salem has been recognized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. for recent collaborative work with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr. Zhi-Yuan Charles Cheng, manager of emerging technologies at AmberWave, has been named winner of the IEEE Electron Devices Society’s George E. Smith Award for his work as lead author on a paper showing research on super-critical thickness strained-silicon-on-insulator for partially depleted device applications, according to a statement released by AmberWave.

“We are pleased that our researchers continue to be on the leading edge of technology development and are being recognized by their peers as top contributors to the semiconductor industry,” said Richard Faubert, AmberWave’s CEO. Founded in 1998, AmberWave manufactures strained silicon for use in semiconductors.

Past research by Cheng has resulted in 15 issued and pending patents to AmberWave’s portfolio.

Cheng will receive his award Dec. 6 at the 52nd annual IEEE International Electron Devices meeting in Washington, D.C. — TRACIE STONE
