Search is on for state’s ‘outstanding older worker’

Experience Works, a national training and employment organization dedicated to helping older workers secure employment, is looking for New Hampshire’s “oldest outstanding worker.”

The New Hampshire search is part of the “Experience Works Prime Time Awards,” a national initiative put forth to bring attention to the contributions made by older workers.

“The Prime Time Awards are instrumental in dispelling myths associated with hiring older workers,” said Sharon Zimmerman, Northeast regional director of Experience Works. “It’s important for employers to realize that these people are vibrant and valuable and have a great deal to offer employers. “

According to Zimmerman, honorees also serve as role models for the individuals assisted by the organization’s Senior Community Service Employment Program, which offers training and employment services to people over the age of 55.

“These awards showcase folks well into their 90s. Last year, of the 50 nominees, the average age was 80,” Zimmerman said. “We’re really sending a message to employers that it is in their best interest to recruit, hire and retain these mature workers.”

James Fabiano of Rochester was last year’s honoree from New Hampshire. At 85, Fabiano is employed as a sports analyst and sales associate for MetroCast Cablevision.

Applicants for the ninth Prime Time Award must be 65 or older and currently employed, working for pay at least 20 hours a week. The honoree must be willing and able to travel in September to Washington, D.C., for the Prime Time Award event.

The visit will include meetings with congressional representatives, a tour of the city and the awards banquet and ceremony.
