‘Green’ lodging focus of Nov. 1 seminar

Businesspeople in New Hampshire’s hospitality industry seeking to cut costs and minimize their impact on the environment will have a chance to learn about “Greening Your Operations and Your Bottom Line,” to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Highland Center.

Sponsored by the Sustainable Lodging Program of the New Hampshire Lodging and Restaurant Association, the seminar will emphasize the financial and environmental benefits of energy efficiency, safer cleaning products and environmentally sensitive landscaping and lawn maintenance.

According to Michelle Veasey, manager of NHLRA’s Sustainable Lodging Program, “Tourism is the second-largest industry in New Hampshire, and our lodging industry has always been focused on preserving the natural beauty that draws people to the Granite State. Now, the industry is going further by working to ensure that their operations are compatible with a healthy environment.”

The New Hampshire Lodging & Restaurant Association launched the Sustainable Lodging Program in March, encouraging lodging properties of all sizes to look at how they can make their lodging operations more environmentally sensitive, while still providing their best service to their guests.

The Nov. 1 seminar will feature experts from across New England, including William White, the New England EPA Energy Star representative, who will discuss how lodging properties can benefit from the developments in energy efficiency.

Utility representatives also will be available to answer questions on the nhsaves rebate program and energy audits.

Carol Westinghouse of Inform will present information on safe and effective cleaning alternatives for the lodging industry. Paula Hatem of Fernwood Farm will share successful strategies for organic lawn care and landscaping with native plants.
