Farmers’ market starting today

A.J. Cavallaro has seen his share of farmers’ markets. After all, his mother runs a flower farm in Wilton, and two have made the rounds.
But when he saw Amherst’s historic town green recently, the 4-year-old proclaimed it “the prettiest place you could have a farmers’ market.”
His mother, Eileen Cavallero, was thrilled.
She’s been instrumental in making a weekly farmers’ market a reality in Amherst. The first market kicks off today from 3-6 p.m. in front of the Congregational Church on the common.
Cavallero is hoping for a laidback, family atmosphere.
“There will be moms and babies and strollers,” she said. “I’d love to see people come with paintbrushes and sketchbooks.”
There will be 10 vendors selling their wares, which include seasonal produce, flowers, free-range eggs, cordwood to order, pastries, honey, fresh seafood and locally made wines.
The market will run every Thursday until Oct. 14.
