Restaurateur Ray wins national humanitarian award
Alex Ray, founder and owner of the Ashland, N.H.-based Common Man Family of Restaurants, has been named winner of the National Restaurant Association’s 2009 Cornerstone Humanitarian award.
The award, along with a $5,000 donation to Ray’s designated cause, Webster Place Recovery Center in Franklin, N.H., was presented to Ray during an award ceremony in Washington, D.C.
The award, designed to celebrate the philanthropic spirit of the restaurant industry, is presented to inspire others to get involved in their communities.
The association’s president and chief executive, Dawn Sweeney, said Ray “has demonstrated a tremendous commitment to serving his community, helping friends and neighbors, and giving back to those in need. Perhaps most admirable is that Alex passes on this sense of community to the employees of his restaurants, encouraging each of them to participate in service projects.”
Specific work highlighted in the award ceremony included Ray’s purchase of the endangered Daniel Webster homestead in Franklin, where he formed the nonprofit Webster Place Recovery Center, a residential treatment facility for drug and alcohol dependency. — NEW HAMPSHIRE BUSINESS REVIEW
