Exeter Hospital has opened its $6 million radiation therapy center, becoming the region’s only accredited comprehensive community hospital cancer program.
In 2003, Exeter Hospital was granted a certificate of need from the state to add radiation therapy to its cancer care.
Located in the hospital’s Perry Medical Building, the center includes exam and consultation rooms, a scanner that simulates treatment and radiation treatment.
Candidates for radiation therapy arrive at the center with a diagnosis. After a physical examination, and review of diagnostic records and results, the patient meets with one of the department’s three doctors to decide if radiation therapy is the best course of action, Peterson said.
The center’s GE LightSpeed Multislice CT Scanner takes a series of images that radiation physics staff survey on a 3-D computer model and plan the patient’s treatment.
The external beam therapy treatment is delivered over a five-week period.
During treatment, patient information is displayed on a computer screen near the Varian linear accelerator, from which the laser therapy is directed.
