Young dentists are choosing N.H

The New Hampshire Dental Society recently reported that 28 new dentists have been given licenses to practice since the beginning of 2013

This letter is a response to the letter that ran in the last issue (“More work needed to improve access to dental care,” July 26 NHBR) citing the need for dental therapists in New Hampshire. The need for these new mid-level providers (dental therapists) is based on the idea the new dentists are not moving into the state to replace the retiring dentists.

In our practice alone, we have three new dentists. We have all chosen this state because New Hampshire is a great place to practice and to raise a family. Outside our practice, we have met numerous young general dentists and specialists choosing to practice here. The New Hampshire Dental Society recently reported that 28 new dentists have been given licenses to practice since the beginning of 2013. The access to care does not appear to be due to the lack of practicing dentists. Perhaps further study needs to be done to see why people are not accessing the care that is available in the state.

Every person in New Hampshire deserves quality dental care. Our concern should be how to deliver the best care to the residents of New Hampshire by doctors specifically trained in the medical/dental field. These people carry the distinction of a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). Why would we want less for our neighbors?
