Windham woman wins new car in Town Hall raffle fund-raiser
TEMPLE – Anne Loosmann of Windham is the new owner of the “liquid yellow” Mini Cooper convertible raffled off by the Friends of the Temple Town Hall. The winning ticket was drawn on Nov. 19.
Loosmann first learned about the raffle in early November. After she heard it a second time, she looked at the car on the Temple Web site, and the next day she rented the movie “The Italian Job,” which features Mini Coopers as get-away vehicles. The next day, a wheel fell off her 8-year-old car, taking the axle with it.
“That did it,” Loosmann says. “I picked up the phone then and there and ordered five tickets.”
It was number four of those five tickets that won for her.
All 500 Mini Cooper Raffle tickets were sold, raising more than $26,000 for the Temple Town Hall Renovation Fund, according to Anne Lunt, spokesman for the Friends. One ticket was even sold to a soldier in Afghanistan.
At last year’s Town Meeting, Temple voters set aside $20,000 for the building project, and several community-based fund-raisers have been held since.
“Our goal is $295,000, with half needed to start construction next year,” said Friends Treasurer Dick Benotti. “We’re definitely off to a wonderful start.”
The Friends of Temple Town Hall are raising funds to renovate the 1842 Greek revival Town Hall and restore it to its traditional role as a community center. Plans call for reopening the balcony, closed since the 1970s, and building a two-story addition to provide a new kitchen, an additional restroom, urgently needed storage space, and a practical, energy-efficient all-purpose room for the community at large. The building’s exterior appearance will not be changed.

A collection was also taken at the raffle drawing for the 210th Engineering Detachment’s Family Support Group. A member of that group, Sgt. Lance Emond of Wilton, was a ticket holder, which he purchased from Afghanistan.
