Stolen stones may be replaced

LYNDEBOROUGH – Capstones removed from the South Cemetery wall may be replaced.

On Monday, two residents told selectmen they own foundations of former barns and may have stone pieces that would repair spaces left when persons unknown removed at least three of the wall’s capstones.

The 6-foot-long cut granite pieces, which topped the wall along Furnace Hill Road, were stolen some time last year, and it appears that other stones may have been removed more recently.

The wall was built in the early 1800s and some of the pieces still contain iron rings where horses were once hitched.

The original entrance on Furnace Hill Road, a set of steep granite steps, is no longer used.
