‘Six Feet’ close-up

You wouldn’t think that a headstone company would need marketing brochures – they are guaranteed customers – but Rock of Ages has great ones. So good in fact, the producers of the Emmy award-winning HBO series “Six Feet Under” want to use the Concord-based company’s sales and marketing collateral as background props.

“The producers had been calling other industry suppliers and our name kept coming up, so they called us,” said Caryn Crump, senior vice president of memorials marketing. “They said they wanted to use real items and not make them to provide authenticity for the show.”

Typically, companies pay thousands of dollars for product placement in movies and TV shows, but the “Six Feet Under” folks said they’d use the Rock of Ages materials without a fee.

“They requested us,” Crump said.

The show also will be shooting a convention scene, so they requested trade show displays from Rock of Ages as well. — CK

It looked good on paper

So whatever happened to the paperless office? The idea seems to have gotten lost in a sea of clutter.

A University of California at Berkeley study found that in 2002, the world’s offices used 43 percent more paper than in 1999, according to Connecticut-based office products firm Esselte. The company says its own research has found that the typical U.S. office worker consumes 200 sheets of paper each day.

According to the company, as e-mails and other electronic data proliferate, many office workers are compelled to punch the print button, resulting in reams of paper that help to fell forests but do little in the way of common sense.

All that paper increases office chaos — you lose things more easily — and reduces efficiency.

“The amount of time lost and waste generated by American businesses as a result of disorganization is staggering,” said Magnus Nicolin, the company’s president and CEO.

If you or your business supported the arts this past year, it’s time to toot your own horn.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2005 Business in the Arts Awards. Sponsored by the New Hampshire Business Committee for the Arts, the awards honor businesses and individual business leaders for their significant contribution to New Hampshire’s cultural community.

You don’t have to donate tens of thousands of dollars like the big guys to be eligible. Support may take the form of sponsorships, volunteer involvement, the provision of in-kind goods and/or professional services, a tie-in that involved the arts in advertising, marketing or public affairs campaigns, as well as other activities.

Winners from four business categories — microenterprise, small, medium and large — will be announced at a May 25 banquet at the Center of New Hampshire-Radisson Hotel in Manchester.

A Leadership Award will be given to an individual business executive for exceptional leadership, vision and commitment in encouraging and developing the partnership between business and the arts.

Downhill fund-raiser

You can make a difference for New Hampshire’s abused and neglected children, and have fun while doing it.

On Friday, Feb. 11, WMUR-TV’s Scott Spradling and WOKQ’s Mark Ericson and Danielle Carrier will be the hosts of “Snow Fest” — a fun-filled day on the slopes of Loon Mountain to benefit CASA of NH.

There will be ski races, a raffle, silent auction and an apres-ski awards luncheon. Activities begin at 9 a.m. and last through the afternoon.

The annual event, now in its sixth year, is a major fund-raiser for CASA’s work with abused and neglected children in the state’s court system.

Participants in the ski event will race down two specially designed, side-by-side ski courses to earn their fastest individual time and to help their total team time. Skiers compete for a variety of awards, and prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place team winners. Team costumes add to the fun, and children are welcome.

Entry fees are $500 for a team of four and $150 for an individual. Participants receive an all-day lift ticket, goody bag, ticket to the awards luncheon and raffle ticket.
