Household hazardous-waste collection slated

REGION – Residents of Amherst, Brookline, Hollis, Hudson, Litchfield, Merrimack, Milford, Mont Vernon, Nashua, Pelham or Windham, may discard household hazardous waste June 3 at the Public Works Garage on Riverside Street in Nashua.

The collection will run from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. The Nashua Regional Planning Commission, which runs the show with the city of Nashua and volunteers from the region, sets the following guidelines:

– Each household may bring up to 10 gallons and/or 20 pounds of household hazardous waste for free; more will be accepted with a donation.

– Accepted hazardous waste includes oil-based paints, pesticides, insecticides, household cleaners, automotive products such as antifreeze, gasoline and brake fluids, photo chemicals, driveway sealer, swimming pool chemicals and solvents, rechargeable batteries (such as nickel-cadmium) and fluorescent light bulbs.

– Materials that will not be accepted include latex paints, asbestos, used motor oil, automotive batteries, propane tanks, radioactive materials, smoke detectors (return these to the manufacturer), flares and explosives.
