Delivery service's Londonderry, N.H., warehouse burglarized

LONDONDERRY, N.H. – Thieves stole more than $100,000 worth of prescription drugs and other goods from a delivery service warehouse during the weekend, investigators say.

Police say the drugs, jewelry, toys and other items were taken from boxes and packages in an unguarded DHL warehouse between Friday night and late Sunday morning. The packages were scheduled for delivery Monday in northern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.

Detectives took fingerprints from machinery Sunday and looked through hundreds of torn and ripped shipping boxes strewn across the floor of the Industrial Drive warehouse.

Police Lt. Scott Saunders said the loss will easily be in six figures.

“In my 20-year career, it’s the largest dollar-figure loss,” he said.

The warehouse handles both air freight and items shipped by ground. The company, based in Plantation, Fla., has another facility at nearby Manchester Airport.

Calls to DHL in Florida were not answered Monday morning. The company’s toll-free New Hampshire number is only for shipping information.

The warehouse closed at 8 p.m. on Friday. The burglary was discovered at 11 a.m. Sunday. Hershey Kisses, board games and a package of sheets were among the items on the floor that had been pulled from boxes and tossed aside.

The plunder included jewelry to be sent to area jewelry stores and prescription drugs including the painkiller OxyContin, investigators at the scene said Sunday. Alan Bishop, a regional corporate security investigator for DHL, said the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will be involved because of the drugs.

Bishop said DHL has guards at its airport facility, but none were at the burglarized warehouse.

Customers expecting packages Monday were expected to call the company, helping it to determine the extent of the loss.
