Southern New Hampshire Medical Center has been granted a special exception by the Zoning Board of Adjustment to build a 75-space parking lot for hospital employees on two lots at 16 and 18 Prospect St.
According to Gerald Prunier, a lawyer for the hospital, two multifamily homes on the lots will be removed and a 6-foot stockade fence will be built at the rear of the site to separate it from nearby homes.
The board approved the project unanimously Tuesday night. The proposal must still be approved by the Planning Board.
“I think this will help out in the area,’’ where parking is frequently a problem, Prunier said, adding that building a new parking garage at site the former Texaco Station is underway as part of an expansion of the hospital.
The parking area will be landscaped and drainage will be handled on site, he said.
One resident, David Fitzgerald, of Hammond Court, at the rear of the site, was worried about exhaust fumes from the parking lot, but was satisfied with the plan after Prunier said there will be a 20-foot buffer between Fitzgerald’s home and the new lot.

New Hampshire is home to 81,535 veterans, including 8,893 female veterans. They are our neighbors, co-workers, coaches, business owners, public servants, parents and friends. They have served our nation. Now the question is whether we are serving them with the urgency, coordination and compassion they deserve.
