Granite State News Collaborative seeks funds to expand NH reporting

The group aims to raise $13,000 by Dec. 31 to receive matching funds

The Granite State News Collaborative, a New Hampshire-focused media nonprofit, is seeking funds to expand reporting and networking opportunities amid journalism in the state.

GSNC has a donation goal of $13,000 by Dec. 31. NewsMatch, a nonprofit fundraising campaign for news organizations, will match monthly donations 12 times, and will double one-time contributions up to $1,000.

The coalition hopes to raise funds today, for GivingTuesday, an international movement that aims to inspire generosity, GSNC Director Melanie Plenda said. The campaign page to make donations may be found at https://www.givegab.com/campaigns/supportlocalnews.

The organization comprises 20 news publications around the Granite State, including NH Business Review, that share content to be republished between one another.

“Even though the GSNC is a small nonprofit, because every partner is contributing to the effort, we are all able to take on and accomplish bold, innovative projects and initiatives,” an editorial from GSNC read. “Essentially the Collaborative exists to fill in gaps in the local news ecosystem, which are typically people and resources.”

With the money raised, GSNC plans to expand a Civic Documenter program to train community members to cover local municipal meetings, allowing for accountability with town and school boards. Other funds would be used to maintain race and equity reporting involving systemic issues and disparities with marginalized communities in New Hampshire. GSNC is also planning to train students and nontraditional journalists to connect them with its 20 news partners, and the nonprofit is eyeing the potential for an NH journalism job fair so those partners can recruit new employees.
