WellPoint’s 3Q profit more than doubles

WellPoint Inc. said Wednesday that its third-quarter revenue rose 135 percent to $11.3 billion from $4.8 billion.

Citing the merger with Anthem, growing enrollment and streamlining operations between the two companies, net income rose $640.7 million, or $1.02 per share, from $242.1 million, or 85 cents a share the previous quarter, beating analysts’ expectations of $1.01 by one cent.

WellPoint is the parent company of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in New Hampshire.

WellPoint’s merger with Anthem last year made it the country’s largest health insurer, with 29 million members. – NHBR STAFF REPORT
