NH September bankruptcy filings edge up from August

But year over year, trend is still going down

New Hampshire bankruptcy filings in September were up compared to August, but still down compared year-over -year.

Some 158 individuals and businesses filed for bankruptcy in September, 22 more than he month before but seven fewer than September 2015, which saw the lowest number of filings for any September since 1989.

The numbers show a slackening of the monthly downward trend in bankruptcies, which were interrupted by a spike in March and April. New Hampshire bankruptcy filings are now down 9.5 percent year-to-date, following five straight years of annual double-digit declines.

As in August, there were nine bankruptcies due to business-related debt, but that’s better than an average of 20 during the prior three months. Only two of those filings were by the businesses themselves, and their principals share the same last name and address. They are:

 • Charlie's Kids Trucking LLC, Milford, filed Sept. 28, Chapter 7. Assets: Less than $50,000. Liabilities: $100,000 to $500,000.

 • Granite Waste Systems Inc., Milford, filed Sept. 28, Chapter 7. Assets: Less than $50,000. Liabilities: $50,000 to $100,000.
