NH bankruptcy filings fall again in August

Three businesses filed for bankruptcy for the month

New Hampshire bankruptcies were down again, falling to a near-record low, in August, and if the trend continues, 2016 could be the sixth consecutive year with a double-digit decline in filings since the recession.

Some 134 New Hampshire individuals and businesses filed for bankruptcy in August – six more than July, which saw close to the lowest number of bankruptcy filings in the last 25 years, and 40 fewer than August 2015.

It was the lowest number of filings for any August since 1989.

The latest data shows continuation of a downward trend, interrupted by a spike in March and April. For the year to date, bankruptcies are down 11 percent from last year.

There were nine bankruptcy filings due to business-related debt, compared to four in July, but that’s better than an average of 20 during the prior three months. Only three of those filings were by the businesses themselves. The other six were filed by individuals who lost money because of their businesses or business holdings.

The August businesses filings were:

 • Woodlands Tavern LLC, Alton, filed Aug. 15, Chapter 7. Assets: less than $50,000. Liabilities: $50,000 to $100,000.

 • JERK LLC (affiliated with Woodlands Tavern), Northfield, Aug. 15, Chapter 7. Assets: less than $50,000. Liabilities: $100,000 to $500,000.

 • Kathy Drive Realty Trust, Merrimack, filed Aug. 29, Chapter 11. Assets and liabilities: $100,000 to $500,000.
