Here’s a hopeful note to hear this new year: the number of bankruptcy filings recorded in New Hampshire reached a record low in December 2015 and for the entire year.

There were 127 bankruptcy filings in December – the lowest number of filings in 25 years, except for a late surge in filings after the tightening of the law in the fall of 2005. That’s a 25.3 percent decline compared to December of 2015, and 13.6 percent over November 2016

That brought the total number of bankruptcies in 2015 to 1,973, the lowest number since 1990, when 1,874 filed for protection. It was a 20.3 percent decrease from 2014, which itself saw 20.7 percent fewer flings from 2013.

Indeed, the annual filings were 61.5 percent fewer then the 5,123 filings recorded at the height of the recession in 2009.

But even in this improving economy, some 123 individuals and four businesses had to notify their creditors that they probably won’t pay them want they owed them.

The businesses are:

 • M&K Complex, a Limited Partnership, South Hampton, filed Dec. 2, Chapter 7. Assets and liabilities: $1 million to $10 million.

 • Healthy Environment Innovations LLC, Dover, filed Dec. 2, Chapter 7. Assets: Less than $50,000. Liabilities: $100,000-$500,000.

 • Troy Redevelopment Group Inc., Troy, filed Dec. 7, Chapter 7. Assets: $500,000 to $1 million. Liabilities: $1 million to $10 million..

 • MRF Sales & Leasing Inc., Goffstown, filed Dec. 30, Chapter 7. Assets: Less than $50,000. Liabilities: $500,000-$1 million.
