11 New Hampshire businesses file for bankruptcy in October

The latest bankruptcy statistics show a general, but troublingly erratic, improvement in the New Hampshire economy.

A surge of 50 bankruptcy filings on Halloween brought the number of October filings up to 314, continuing a year-over-year decline, but it was the second consecutive month-over-month increase in a row.

Also troubling was a big jump in the number of business filings.

Overall, there were 15 percent fewer bankruptcy filings in October 2012 than in October 2011, and a third less than the number filed in 2009, when the economy was in free-fall.

But the filings in October 2012 were 10 higher than in September, which was six higher than August, the first time the numbers for any month dipped below 300 since 2008.Year to date, there have been 3,383 filings, about 17 percent below last year's pace in 2011, when the total was 14 percent lower than the record set in 2010, when some 5,500 filed.
