10 N.H. businesses file for bankruptcy in August
Total filings set a 25-year low for the month
Some 157 New Hampshire households and businesses filed for bankruptcy protection in August – the smallest number in any August since 1990, if not earlier than that.
The total was 64 percent smaller than the 244 bankruptcy petitions filed in August 2013, and 17 percent less than the 190 filings in July 2014.
In 2009, in the heart of the recession, there were 447 filings in August.
The August number represents the fewest filings in any month since May 2006, which was not only near the height of the last boom, but shortly after U.S. bankruptcy law changed, making it much tougher to file for bankruptcy protection.
Meanwhile 10 of the bankruptcy filings in August were related to recent business debt. Most filed as households, but three filed as businesses. As in past practice, NHBR will list the related businesses that caused the debt, not the individuals actually filing:
