Web designers honored at ninth N.H. Internet Awards

The Merrimack Tomahawks High School football team’s Web site was chosen as Best of Show at the ninth annual New Hampshire Internet Awards, presented March 15 at the Center of New Hampshire in Manchester.

The NHIA is an annual celebration of the talent and creativity of New Hampshire Web designers, professionals and hobbyists alike. New Hampshire Business Review hosted the event, which was created by its sister company, NH.com, to recognize online excellence in New Hampshire.

“It’s a privilege for New Hampshire Business Review to sponsor an event that honors the innovations and creativity of the people and businesses that make up an industry that is such an essential ingredient of New Hampshire’s economy,” said Jeff Feingold, editor of the Business Review and its Web site, NHBR.com.

The Merrimack Tomahawks site was recognized in the Best Education Site category and took Best of Show after earning the highest score overall from the judges. Judges gave each site a numerical score in six categories, including Mission Accomplished, Navigation and Structure, Content, Visual Design, Functionality, and Overall Experience. Each site’s design submitted a mission statement along with the entry, so judges could more accurately determine “mission accomplished” based on the aims of the site’s designer and owner.

This year saw a general overhaul of judging criteria and a refinement of the judging process, as well as the addition of new judges to the roster – including Web experts from the news media industry, international marketing firms, Web software companies, AOL, Discovery.com and more. The NIA also increased opportunities for NH designers to showcase their work by expanding the Outer Limits category (for NH-designed sites built for out of state companies) to include a position in each of the other contest categories.

“There was an amazing quality to the sites this year,” said Ernesto Burden, vice president of digital media for The Telegraph and one of the organizers of the event. “New Hampshire design firms are the perfect examples of innovative, creative-culture businesses. The competition was fierce, and I urge people to go to the Internet Awards Web site to check out the complete list of entries – because although there must be winners in a competition such as this, every site entered has something to teach us about doing business, distributing information, and creating opportunities for real dialogue with customers on the Web.”

Jon Nolan (www.jonnolan.net), a former front-runner for the New England roots-rockers Say ZuZu and a 10-year veteran of the indie music scene, performed at the ceremony.

This year’s non-profit partner and beneficiary was PlusTime NH, a statewide nonprofit organization supporting the development and sustainability of quality after-school programs for youth.
