SBA sees 119% increase in N.H. loan approvals

The New Hampshire District of the U.S. Small Business Administration has released some encouraging economic news – the number and amount of loans it has guaranteed in the first fiscal quarter of 2011 have increased considerably from the same period a year ago.The SBA approved of more than 277 loans worth more than $78 million in the first fiscal quarter of 2011 — Oct. 1, 2010 through Dec. 31, 2010.This translates into a 46 percent increase in the number of loans guaranteed and a remarkable 119 percent increase in the total dollars approved.Eight of New Hampshire’s 10 counties posted signifcant gain in the number of loans approved. Coos County had a drop of 6 percent and Sullivan County showed a 25 percent decrease in approved loans. Coos County was also the only county to not post increases in the total dollar amount of loans approved.According to the SBA, the number of loans approved and their amounts can be different than the actual number and amount dispersed for a variety of reasons, including businesses deciding to take less than the approved amount for debt management purposes.In the first fiscal quarter of 2011, the New Hampshire office of the Small Business Administration disbursed a total of $28,390,200 in loans to 158 different small businesses.SBA does not make loans directly, but offers guarantees on loans through banks and other lenders as well as offers information on small-business loans, grants, bonds and other financial assistance.
