ApprenticeshipNH, a workforce initiative of the Community College System of New Hampshire (CCSNH), has partnered with Associated Builders and Contractors of New Hampshire/Vermont (ABC NH/VT) and Elm Grove Companies to launch New Hampshire’s first registered apprenticeship program (RAP) for maintenance technicians. This two-year program blends paid, hands-on training at Elm Grove with over 300 hours of related coursework provided by Manchester Community College (MCC) and NHTI-Concord’s Community College.

Maintenance technicians play a critical role in ensuring the functionality of multifamily and commercial properties through repairs, troubleshooting and customer service. With growing demand and a wave of retirements in the industry, the need for skilled maintenance workers is rising. Recognizing this gap, Elm Grove spearheaded efforts to create a formal training pathway. Finding no existing RAP in the state, they collaborated with ABC NH/VT in 2024 to design one based on the association’s carpentry apprenticeship model.

ABC NH/VT serves as the official sponsor of the program, overseeing its management and standards.

In January 2025, ApprenticeshipNH joined the effort to provide technical assistance, help with state and federal approvals, and offer scholarships to offset education costs. The curriculum, developed in collaboration with MCC and NHTI, covers a broad range of skills, including HVAC, carpentry, mechanical repairs, drywalling, OSHA safety standards and CPR.

Participants will receive structured, paid training at Elm Grove Companies and must demonstrate competency in core areas before progressing through the program. Elm Grove sees this as both a workforce development strategy and an effort to elevate the perception of maintenance technician roles.

Applications for the Maintenance Technician RAP are now open. Interested candidates can email apprenticeship@elmgrovecompanies.com for more information.
