New round of Transportation Alternatives Program funding begins

$3.2 million available for non-motorized infrastructure projects

The NH Department of Transportation is starting a new competitive selection round for pedestrian and bicycling infrastructure projects under the federally funded Transportation Alternatives Program, or TAP.

The goal of purpose of TAP is to foster non-motorized transportation infrastructure that is safe, in good physical condition and accessible. Two years of funding will be awarded.

New Hampshire’s annual TAP allocation is $3.2 million, $2.6 million of it federal.

Projects are limited to the following eligible activities:

• Construction, planning and design of on-road and off-road trail facilities for pedestrians, bicyclists and other users of non-motorized forms

• Construction, planning and design of infrastructure-related projects and systems that will provide safe routes for non-drivers, including children, older adults and individuals with disabilities to access daily needs

• Conversion and use of abandoned railroad corridors for pedestrians, bicyclists, or other non-motorized transportation users

• Safe Routes to School infrastructure activities eligible (20 percent match required)

Minimum project limit is $400,000, with a maximum project limit of $1 million.

Interested applicants can submit a letter of interest to NHDOT by 4 p.m. Friday, July 13. Applicants must submit a letter of interest to be able to submit a funding application.
