Marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug in the U.S. The main active chemical is THC, which stands for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol.

NEGATIVE EFFECTS: Short-term effects include memory and learning problems, distorted perception, and difficulty thinking and solving problems.

MEDICAL APPLICATIONS: Pain relief, relaxation, prevention of nausea and vomiting, appetite stimulant, decreasing spasticity, mood enhancer.

Despite its low toxicity, today’s marijuana is 10 to 15 times stronger than it was in the 1960s.

Synthetic THC is known as dronabinol. It is a legal medication marketed under the name Marinol in pill form and as Sativex in spray form.
