Disaster preparedness conference set

The timing probably couldn’t be better for an upcoming disaster preparedness conference, presented by the Business and Industry Association of New Hampshire.

“Disaster Preparedness: Is Your Business Ready?” — planned for 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 24 at the Grappone Conference Center in Concord — is designed to help small-business owners and managers determine whether they are prepared to cope with a natural disaster or other catastrophic event and offer simple steps to begin creating a business continuity plan.

Organized in partnership with the NorthEast Disaster Recovery Information X-Change (NEDRIX), with support from the New Hampshire Small Business Development Center, the conference will feature practical advice and information from private-sector business continuity planners, said Jim Roche, president of the BIA.

“Businesses must be prepared for the unexpected,” he said. “Developing and maintaining a current disaster plan is critical, especially since, according to estimates, 25 percent of businesses never recover after a disaster. We hope this conference will help companies, particularly small businesses, evaluate their processes and develop a back-up plan for getting their products and services out should disaster strike.”

Keynoting the conference will be Ian Howell, CEO of Newforma, a software company serving architecture, engineering, construction and owner/operator organizations worldwide. Newforma was forced to evacuate and relocate from Manchester’s Millyard due to last year’s Mother’s Day floods. Howell will discuss and analyze his company’s disaster experience and recovery efforts.

Business continuity planners from New Hampshire NEDRIX – a nonprofit organization of crisis management professionals — will lead the morning and afternoon work sessions.

Cost to attend conference is $95 for BIA members, NEDRIX members and SBDC clients, and $125 for non-members.
