Patients want high-quality healthcare delivered in a way that’s understandable and affordable. At Bedford Ambulatory Surgical Center (BASC), someone undergoing knee or hip replacement surgery receives all the care they need in one bundle. Hospital-based surgical facilities, alternatively, might bill you individually on everything from imaging, anesthesia, facilities, implants, post-operative therapy and more, which can cause costs to triple. Now with BASC’s investment in technologically advanced tools like the Stryker Mako robotic-assisted surgery system, patients know they are getting cutting-edge care without the unpredictable price.
Orthopedics has been a specialty of BASC since it was founded more than 30 years ago, as the first ambulatory surgical center in New Hampshire.
Dr. Andrew Garber, a total joint specialist at the NH Orthopedic Center who was voted best orthopedic surgeon by New Hampshire Magazine this year, trained with the Mako during his residency and fellowship. He encouraged BASC to invest in the system when he joined their surgical team.
“A CT scan is done prior to surgery, which is used to create a specific plan for that patient,” explains Garber. “Intra-operatively, sensors are attached to the leg, and the range of motion and alignment are assessed. The implants are then manipulated through the Mako software to balance the tension of the ligaments. Once the plan is finalized, the robotic arm is then used to make those bony cuts within 0.5mm of accuracy. Having this precision and accuracy allows the surgeon to customize the procedure to that patient and ensure their knee is properly balanced.”
Because of the high volume of joint replacement surgeries performed at the BASC, it was feasible to purchase the robot, which is technology typically found in hospital settings. The newest generation of surgeons is being trained on robotics, so it made sense for BASC to invest in the robotic technology.
The Mako system allows surgeons to precisely navigate each surgery, customized to each patient, with smaller incisions, less time under anesthesia and faster recovery time.
Research on the Mako system shows that six months post-op, patients whose surgery included the robot had lower pain scores and higher satisfaction than those with unassisted surgery. Patients go home the same day and resume their usual activities faster.

“There will always be variation in recovery and outcomes, but the vast majority of patients are very happy with their outcomes,” Garber says.
As an ambulatory surgical center, BASC specializes in the services it provides. Its physicians practice repeating the same procedures.
BASC’s bundle option packages together the joint replacement surgery, hardware, imaging, post-operative care and other costs, so there’s full price transparency for patients and insurers. This package can cost about $30,000, compared to procedures totaling around $100,000 at a hospital.
With highly trained surgeons and state-of-the-art technology, you’ll know that even though you’re saving money, you’re not compromising on your healthcare.
“Having robotic technology at BASC has really helped provide consistency in my practice,” Garber says, “And given patients the choice to have the same procedure with excellent outcomes, but typically at a much lower cost.”
BASC has been a healthcare leader since its roots as the first ambulatory surgical center in New Hampshire. Today, it continues to be at the forefront of healthcare innovation, implementing tools that improve the patient experience and price transparency practices that help patients access lower-cost, high-quality care.
