Washing machine gets lift out of Furnace Brook

LYNDEBOROUGH – Weather, time and the water level finally combined favorably to allow members of the highway department to pull a discarded washing machine from Furnace Brook. The appliance had been spotted some time ago a short distance downstream from the foundations of the old glass factory crushing mill.

Because of the steep banks along Cider Mill Road, the extraction required the use of the backhoe, chains, and considerable time and muscle, road agent Kent Perry said.

There is still more ordinary trash along that area of the brook – bottles, cans, junk food wrappers and such – that a group of volunteers will tackle.
