Take a tour of Riverview Mills and see artwork in progress

The artists at the Riverview Mills in Wilton will hold their annual open house studio tours today and Sunday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Several artists will hold workshops during the event.

The featured artist this year is photographer David Schmidt. His photograph of the mill’s circular staircase is used on this year’s postcard.

His passion now is close-up views of natural objects, particularly flowers.

“I just do it for myself really,” he said. “If I get something good, I show it or sell it if someone wants a copy.”

There are about 15 pictures in the exhibit. Among his favorites in the exhibit is “Japanese Painted Ferns,” and a study of a tiny red mushroom he found while hiking. Nestled within a tangle of roots, he happened to see the tiny red speck.

All of his work is for sale, and the exhibit will continue through June 1.

There are 13 artists at the mills and nine of them are taking part. These include Nancy Newsted, oil painting; Pamela Nowell, potter (owner of Mudworks Studio); Mary Graham, oil painting; Sussy-Rose Shields, fine craft jeweler; Vicky McGiver, miniature doll houses; Pat McGuire, acrylic painting; Christine McGuire, mixed media; Leslie Rook, bead-woven jewelry; Nicole Colvin-Griffen, Red Moon Stained Glass Studio.
