Summer reading

Like many schools in the city, Fairgrounds Middle School began its end of the school year by holding a summer reading kickoff. Students were encouraged to continue their reading over the summer.

Several authors and illustrators came to visit the students, including Julie Hahnke, author of the recently released children’s fantasy novel “The Grey Ghost.”

Hahnke answered questions from students, including which character in the book was her favorite.

“That’s like trying to pick your favorite child,” she said, laughing.

Hahnke finished the presentation by playing the bagpipes.

Teachers said it’s important to keep students gested reading lists. Sue Carey, a seventh-grade English teacher, said the school tries to pick books that are sequels or part of a series.

“That way they can continue the story over the summer,” she said.
