Planners of annual Old Home Days trying for something different

HUDSON – This year’s Hudson Old Home Days will have a much wilder feel than in recent years.

Kids can visit a petting zoo and get pony rides from Charmingfare Farm, watch a birds of prey demonstration and then head over to the Wildlife Encounters Zoo – part of its unofficial “animal” theme.

Providing family fun is one thing, providing something kids haven’t experienced before is quite another, said Jessica Clegg of the Hudson Historical Society.

“They want something that’s very engaging for the kids beyond just the carnival rides,” she said. “How many kids are going to see the New Hampshire School of Falconry? What can I say, we try to do something different this year.”

Clegg also said the downturn in the economy played a role for event planners.

“We were trying to keep it fresh so families can come for a minimum amount of money and have fun all day,” she said.

After the $2 parking fee, event-goers must just pay for any rides or food or other goods they buy from vendors.

Except for the pony rides, all of the demonstrations and zoos are free.

Clegg said the festival will once again boast the aforementioned carnival rides, 16 in total, and some of its yearly staples like karaoke and fireworks. It will be having Adult Haystack Treasure Hunts for the second straight year, because they were such a hit last year, said Clegg.

Festivities will take place in the field across from Alvirne High School on Derry Road and will kick off at 5. p.m. Thursday.
