Landfill chief heading south
Along with the departure of Public Works Director Rick Seymour, the city lost another longtime manager last week.
Jason “Jay” Marcotte, the landfill supervisor, is leaving for a job in Texas. Marcotte will be the assistant director of public works in Bryan, a city of 70,000.
Marcotte called the job a promotion, noting he’ll be making “a lot more money” than he earns in Nashua. According to city records, Marcotte earns $75,027.
While he has never lived in Texas, Marcotte said he visits Bryan frequently because a college friend lives there. Bryan is a twin city of College Station and is northwest of Houston.
Marcotte has been Nashua’s landfill director for two years and has worked for the city for 5-1/2 years. His last day here will be Sept. 26.leaving for a similar position in Merrimack.
Three city women known for their activism have been recognized by the N.H. Commission on the Status of Women.
Meri Goyette, Sandra Pelletier and Betty J. Winberg were nominated for the commission’s Women’s Recognition Award. According to the commission, the award is given each year to a woman “who has brought honor and valor to herself and to the state through her accomplishments and contributions.
Goyette is a life trustee of the Arts and Science Center, formerly housed at 14 Court St. She also was a co-coordinator of the city’s Sculpture Symposium held over the summer.
Pelletier is the president and chief executive officer of Gateway Community Service.
Winberg is a longtime community activist who has worked on behalf of “vulnerable populations,” according to the commission.
Not all local voters have been charmed by Sarah Palin, the Republican nominee for vice president.
After Sen. John McCain announced her as his running mate, several residents – including one of whom who described herself as a registered Republican – called or stopped by The Telegraph’s office on Main Street asking for contact information about the city’s headquarters for Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama.
