Helping those who help us

People interested in helping emergency responders in crisis like last December’s ice storm are invited to come to the Amherst Central Fire Station to learn how.

The towns of Amherst, Mont Vernon and Milford are teaming up to look for residents to serve as volunteers in a Community Emergency Response Team that would respond to disasters.

The meeting will be Wednesday, May 6, at 7 p.m. Amherst Fire Department’s Central Station is at 177 Amherst Street.

CERT volunteers would be used in a variety of ways including: answering non-emergency phone lines, clearing ing emergency responders, delivering water and supplies, ham radio operations, and staffing emergency shelters.

Volunteers would receive about 18 hours of training. Sessions would cover disaster preparedness, fire suppression, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, disaster psychology and team organization. Light refreshments will be served.
