Environmental concerns around car suds run-off

They may be worthy fund-raising events, but benefit car washes in Milford are running into state storm water regulations.

Town Administrator Guy Scaife told the board Monday night he would meet with three landowners this week to talk about detergents, to make sure they contain no phosphates or other hazardous materials, and “ideally the water should be collected,” he said.

He will also meet with organizations that hold car washes.

“We are starting an education process,” he said. “I’m certain there will be no hard-line mandate this year.”

Water from two Milford locations where the fundraising car washes are typically held go directly into the Souhegan River or into wetlands, he said.
