Board to discuss spending oversight

NASHUA – Members of the Nashua Board of Education’s finance committee will discuss how to improve their oversight of school district spending at a meeting tonight.

The meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. at the school administrative offices at 141 Ledge St., comes after it was discovered that the school district overspent its budget by $3.36 million last year.

A $3 million deficit is also being projected for the upcoming school year. The district is freezing 53 vacant full- and part-time positions to make up some of the losses.

It’s not yet known what led to the shortfalls in the budgets, but the school district is investigating the cause.

Board members said they were never informed about the possibility of a deficit, but also said they stopped receiving the monthly financial reports that had been distributed in the past.
