Alarm scares off would-be intruder

The shrill sound of a home security alarm apparently scared off a would-be intruder before he could gain access to a residence at 21 Richman Road early Tuesday morning, police said.

Just before 7 a.m., a neighbor, who said she was prompted to look out her window when her dog began barking and she heard the alarm sounding, told police she spotted a person dressed in black clothing and a hood running from the home and into a wooded area that lies behind the residences.

She called police, who responded along with the department’s K-9 unit and began searching the area. Police said their dog picked up the suspect’s track and followed it through the woods, but it ended when they reached Gowing Road, where police theorize the suspect entered a waiting vehicle and fled.

Police said it didn’t appear that the suspect ever gained access to the home. The neighbor said the owners, who were away at the time, were summoned home shortly after the incident.
