New Hampshire business executives voiced their support for energy and climate legislation at a gathering Wednesday at the University of New Hampshire at Manchester.

The event was part of a campaign called the Race for American Jobs & Clean Energy Leadership.

Among those in attendance was Gary Hirshberg, chief executive of the Londonderry-based Stonyfield Farm, who said “climate action offers economic opportunity rather than economic penalty. We either get into this now, with the right policies, or we’ll find ourselves sitting on the sidelines losing our economic competitiveness.”

According to Hirshberg, his company has saved $7.4 million through its energy and climate initiatives, which have enabled the company to support 40 jobs.

“Businesspeople are starting to see green practices as an economic issue that saves money and creates jobs,” said Michael Skelton, vice president of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce.

According to organizers of the event, up to 7,000 new jobs would be created in New Hampshire if he legislation were to pass, with average household income increasing by up to $726 per year by 2020. – JEFF FEINGOLD/NEW HAMPSHIRE BUSINESS REVIEW
