N.H. bankruptcy filings slow slightly

Bankruptcy filings aren't continuing to increase in New Hampshire, but they aren't slowing down very much either. Some 442 people filed for bankruptcy protection in New Hampshire in September -- four fewer than August, but about 10 percent less than July -- the low point not only of 2009, but also of the last four years since the new bankruptcy law made it harder for people to file for protection -- when some 492 individuals and business went bankrupt. That's still a 32 percent jump from 2008, and the state is on pace to end the year with a 33 percent increase in bankruptcy filings from last year. September is the last month of the bankruptcy court's fiscal year. The court ended that year with 4,870 filings -- 34 percent more than the previous fiscal year. Only five of the September filings were by businesses, compared to 14 business filings in August and 17 in July. Here is the list of September businesses filings: • Raymond Sand & Gravel LLC, Raymond, filed Sept. 7, Chapter 11. Debts include $114,000 to the state Department of Labor and some $23,000 to the U.S. Department of Labor unit that oversees gravel pit safety. Assets: $358,715. Liabilities: $521,899. • Seff Enterprises & Holdings LLC, New Boston, filed Sept. 15, Chapter 7 involuntary petition. (This is of a corporation mainly to engage in litigation with the town of New Boston over development of the Waldorf Estates subdivision. In an 81-page filing, the company alleges it is a victim of a widespread conspiracy against it involving its main lender, a lawyer and a bookkeeper. The lender simply said the company defaulted on its mortgage.) Assets and liabilities not listed at this time. • Two Macs LLC, Pembroke, filed Sept. 21, Chapter 7.
