The stage has been set for a new statewide environmental initiative when representatives from a cross-section of Granite State businesses met with government officials to discuss ways of encouraging growth of environmentally responsible companies, products and services in New Hampshire. Hosted by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services and Region I of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the forum was designed to encourage environmental leadership and innovation in the business community. Forum members explored ways in which the government could encourage businesses to go beyond regulatory compliance by linking sustainable business practices with environmental performance. “As our state and region faces more complex pressing challenges such as climate change, energy issues and growth pressures, the need is greater than ever for government and business to work in partnership to identify the creative solutions that will ensure a healthy environment and a strong economy,” said DES Commissioner Michael Nolin. Participating businesses included BAE Systems, New Hampshire Ball Bearings, National Grid, Osram Sylvania, Millipore, LDI Corp., Northland Forest Products, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Pinetree Power, Grubb & Ellis and Monadnock Paper Company. The meeting also included representatives from the governor’s office, the Department of Resources and Economic Development, the Office of Energy and Planning, the Small Business Development Center and the Business and Industry Association. - TRACIE STONE
