Michael McKelvy, a 26-year veteran of the national engineering firm CH2M Hill, has been named the new president and chief operating officer of Gilbane Building Company – the first non-family member to head the Providence, R.I.-based construction firm.

McKelvy is scheduled to assume his new role on July 7, when Bill Gilbane Jr., the company’s president and COO since 2004, will become vice chairman of the firm.

“Mike truly understands who we are as a company and is a perfect complement to our existing leadership team,” said Tom Gilbane, chairman and CEO of the firm. “When we consider the leadership and experience that Mike brings combined with the caliber and expertise of our current senior management, I am incredibly excited and impressed with the possibilities that lay ahead.”

McKelvy, a registered architect in 30 U.S. states, got his start at the South Carolina engineering firm Lockwood Greene, which was acquired by CH2M Hill in 2003, has held a number of high-level executive roles with the firm, including president of the government, environment and infrastructure division as well as its industrial and manufacturing and life-sciences divisions.

Gilbane Building ranks at No. 14 on ENR's list of the Top 400 Contractors, with $4 billion in 2013 revenue.
