The Merrimack Valley Chapter of SCORE, in its volunteer counseling of more than a thousand entrepreneurs every year, has found that although most small businesses recognize the importance of the Internet and social media to market their businesses, many lack the knowledge to employ this technology, are overwhelmed by the prospect of implementing it and at a loss as to where to begin.
To address this, SCORE is introducing a new workshop, “Essentials of an Online Presence for Small Business.” Presented by an expert in e-Marketing and supplemented by SCORE members, the workshop is specifically designed to provide practical advice on how a small business should be spending its time and money on websites, email marketing, social media and other Internet tools.
Jonathan May of YourPresenceOnTheWeb.com, an e-Marketing consultantcy based in Amherst, N.H., is leading the workshop. May defines an online presence as “any existence of any individual or business that can be found via an online search,” including websites, e-commerce stores, blogs, social media profiles such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+, multimedia channels like YouTube, Video and Flickr, mentions in business directory and review sites like Merchant Circle, Yelp, YellowPages.com, TripAdvisor, Angie’s List, and a whole lot more.”
May understands how intimidating all this can be to a small business seeking to compete in today’s marketplace but lacking e-Marketing experience. With that in mind, the workshop’s focus will be:
• What should you focus on right away?
• What not to do!
• How to determine what’s most effective for your specific business.
Dick Demaine, SCORE workshop chair, says, “We at SCORE have found that although many small businesses are using the Internet to market themselves, they really don’t have an understanding of all the tools available to them and how they integrate with one another. As a result, their efforts are scattered, less effective than they can be, and more costly than they need be.”
“We looked outside our organization for an experienced e-Marketing expert,” adds Demaine, “and were able to secure Jonathan May, who has more than 30 years experience delivering all kinds of information solutions to organizations ranging from global corporations to small businesses and non-profits. SCORE members will supplement his knowledge with their own years of experience.”
