The New Hampshire employment picture still remains somewhat cloudy, with employers reporting a 10 percent year-over-year increase in the number of new hires, but a 14 percent drop in the number reported only a month earlier.Worse still, there were 55,156 fewer hires in 2009 than in 2008. The yearly total for 2009 was 221,149 new hires – a drop of nearly 20 percent from the 276,305 reported in 2008.According to the New Hampshire Department of Employment Security, 18,327 new hires were reported by employers in December -- 10 percent more than the 16,635 reported in December 2008.But the agency also said that there were 3,018 – or 14 percent -- fewer people hired than November, when 21,345 new hires were reported.Employment Security tracks the data monthly through W4 forms submitted by employers.Companies that have locations in multiple states, however, can choose which state to report the data to, regardless of where the employee was hired. The data also include workers who have been rehired and some independent contractors. — CINDY KIBBE/NEW HAMPSHIRE BUSINESS REVIEW Edit ModuleShow Tags
