N.H. hotel construction expected to fall

A lodging real estate trade group expects the number of new New Hampshire hotels to drop over the next two years.According to Portsmouth-based Lodging Econometrics, three properties – with a total of 251 rooms – are expected to open in 2010. In 2009, five hotels, or 394 room opened in the state.For 2011, the firm forecasts two hotel openings, with 179 rooms, in New Hampshire.As of the fourth quarter of 2009, there were a total of 473 hotels in the Granite State, with 24,805 rooms.According to the firm, there are some five projects currently under construction in the state, with four starts expected in the next 12 months and seven projects in the early planning stages – for a total of 1,274 rooms.The company also said five hotels opened for business in 2007 in New Hampshire and seven in 2008.The New England region is expected to see 20 hotels open their doors in 2010 – about a 26 percent decrease from 2009 – and another nine slated for 2011. – CINDY KIBBE/NEW HAMPSHIRE BUSINESS REVIEW Edit ModuleShow Tags
