Hood to add N.H. flavor to New England ice cream line

In what could be called “ice cream for the people, by the people,” HP Hood heard Granite Staters’ cries and has announced that it will create a New Hampshire-inspired ice cream flavor. According to a press release by the Chelsea,Mass.-based dairy company, New Hampshire residents, beginning April 30 at midnight, can enter the “Real Taste of New Hampshire” contest, by visiting a special HP Hood Web site, realtasteofnewhampshire.com, to suggest an ice cream flavor and key ingredients for the Granite State. “We were starting to receive quite a few e-mails and calls from New Hampshire residents,” said Breanne Wagner, spokesperson for Hood. “We decided we really had to step up this part of our campaign.” Earlier this month, Hood had released 18 flavors of ice cream evocative of the New England states — except for New Hampshire. Hood had been working in partnership with each states’ travel and tourism departments, including New Hampshire’s, as part of the promotion, but a deal with the New Hampshire division could not be finalized until now. The New Hampshire campaign includes a $1 million TV advertising blitz, sampling of New England Creamery Ice Cream at events throughout New England, and contests featuring prizes donated by regional tourism boards. Vicki Cimino, communications manager for the state’s Division Travel and Tourism Development, said the division was finalizing a prize package for a weekend getaway in New Hampshire as part of the promotion. “Hood has always served as New Hampshire’s hometown dairy,” said Lynne Bohan, also speaking on behalf of HP Hood. “We’re eager to see how creative New Hampshire residents can be when given the chance to name a flavor devoted to vacation travel in their own state - dare we hope for Nashua Nibbling Nougat? - and we can’t wait to taste that new flavor in August!” The contest runs through May 30, with the winner flavor appearing in grocery store freezers sometime in July or August. —CINDY KIBBE Edit ModuleShow Tags
