Tell the president about shipyard

Published:

To the editor: The Base Realignment and Closure Commission has heard loud and clear how the state of New Hampshire feels about the Secretary of Defense’s recommendation that the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard should be closed. Now it’s time to tell the president. I urge all New Hampshire communities and citizens to send me letters by Aug. 1 that ask President Bush to keep the nation’s most efficient shipyard open and working at full capacity. I will make sure they are hand-delivered to him. We need to tell the president that closure threatens our national defense and would result in the loss of the jobs of over 2,000 shipyard workers living in 50 New Hampshire towns — along with at least another 12,000 people employed in affected Maine and New Hampshire businesses. Correspondence addressed to President George W. Bush should be sent to Mayor Evelyn Sirrell, City of Portsmouth, 1 Junkins Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801 by Aug. 1. I also want to publicly thank everyone who has sent donations to the Seacoast Shipyard Association. I also want to thank the communities that thus far have sent me letters, proclamations and petitions for the president. Mayor Evelyn Sirrell City of Portsmouth Edit ModuleShow Tags
